Our History...

We moved to beautiful Galena in 1994 from Spring Grove, IL. We both grew up on small farms and brought with us our love of gardening. In 1995 we found the property now known as Murphy’s Gardens which had long been a fruit & produce farm in one form or another. We began by selling our excess produce from a table in the garage and slowly expanded as time & finances allowed to what we are today. The perennial end of the business stemmed from Lori’s desire to grow more unique plants that couldn't be found in the existing greenhouses in Dubuque, Platteville & Galena. So, a small greenhouse was constructed by Paul and so it began. Every year another greenhouse goes up, the shop is improved & garden areas are expanded to offer more display gardens.

Murphy’s Gardens is a full-time job for Lori these days.  Paul runs their other company Murphy’s Home Maintenance in addition to doing all the construction & much of the vegetable planting on the farm.

Our son, Kyle (age 12), is learning the business and is in charge of kid entertainment with tours of our fish & frogs in the water ponds.

We are privileged to live in this wonderful community. Every year we choose area charities to support on special weekends in May. Murphy’s Gardens, as the Galena Area representative for “Plant a Row for the Hungry” campaign, is supporting the Galena Community Gardens efforts to grow vegetable plots for the United Churches Galena Food Pantry. We also have been greatly blessed by our son’s school, Tri State Christian School in Galena, and feel strongly the need to plant the seed of faith in these children. Check out our events & classes calendar to see how you can help.

We plan on growing for you for a long time & making the world a more beautiful place - one garden at a time.

Even our cats enjoy the gardens!  They are usually lounging in the house, but once in a while they come out to visit.  You never know where they will decide to nap.
