Our History...

We moved to beautiful Galena in 1994 from Spring Grove, IL. We both grew up on small farms and brought with us our love of gardening. In 1995 we found the property now known as Murphy’s Gardens which had long been a fruit & produce farm in one form or another. We began by selling our excess produce from a table in the garage and slowly expanded as time & finances allowed to what we are today. Every year another greenhouse goes up, the shop is improved & garden areas are expanded.

Murphy’s Gardens is a full-time job for Lori these days. Paul runs their other company Murphy’s Home Maintenance in addition to doing all the construction & much of the vegetable planting on the farm. Their son Kyle, age 8, is along side them learning all about the plants and veggies. His latest business venture is his own eclectic collection of products he sells at his own little stand. He calls it “Nature Booth”.

Lori begins in January with propagation of the thousands of plants that will be sold in the spring. Dozens of display gardens provide seeds, divisions and cuttings and the newest varieties are purchased from mid-west nurseries as plugs and nurtured into mature plants in our own greenhouses.

Family & friends lend a hand with potting, greenhouse construction, sales, landscape design & even website design! We have been blessed with many talented & helpful people that have helped us grow. We work hard, but we have so much fun!

We want you, our customers, to feel welcome & appreciated. You are encouraged to wander our gardens and relax on a swing or garden bench. Coffee, lemonade, advice and plenty of smiles are always free. We hope to see you soon!

To complement our fine selection of plants we offer an eclectic gathering of terra cotta & glazed pottery, birdbaths, birdhouses, one-of-a-kind metal garden sculptures and other garden enhancements to help personalize your landscape. Seeds, tools, fertilizer, soil, gloves & other products we have tested & found to be useful are also offered.
